Daihatsu Terios Review

The Terios is a compact SUV co-developed by Daihatsu and Toyota, with looks inspired from the more expensive Toyota RAV4.

In its second generation, the Terios is available in two body styles; a short wheelbase three-door model that can seat five and a long wheelbase five-door variant capable of seating seven.

The third seating row in the seven-seater Terios is short on space and is best occupied by children or folded to generate more luggage space.

Both short and long wheelbase versions are powered by a 102bhp, 1.5-litre motor mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Performance is only adequate and drivers may feel the need for more power at motorway speeds especially in the full time four-wheel drive version or the longer wheelbase version.

While the short wheelbase five-seater version comes with either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive the seven-seater Terios is available only with two-wheel drive. Though the Terios is designed for the road the full time 4X4 short wheelbase version can handle mild off-road excursions too.

The Terios’s compact dimensions and relatively light weight are more in line with modern hatchbacks rather than a SUV. At the same time it affords SUV like high seating position, high ground clearance, interior space and 4X4 capability at a bargain price.

The interiors are basic and built to a price but have an airy feel thanks to the generous glass area. Standard equipment includes air conditioning, integral audio system, power windows and reverse parking sensors. Safety kit consists of the rudimentary dual front airbags and ABS with EBD.
